On Wednesday, California Republicans initiated a federal lawsuit aimed at obstructing a recently approved U.S. House map that voters decisively supported.Proposition 50, championed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, aims to assist Democrats in gaining up to five congressional seats in the forthcoming midterm elections. The lawsuit contends that the map-makers improperly factored race into their decisions to benefit Hispanic voters and seeks judicial intervention to prevent implementation of these new boundaries before the 2026 elections. This complaint has been lodged in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.Representing the plaintiffs, Mike Columbo asserted at a press briefing that the map disproportionately favors one racial group over others, claiming this infringes upon both the 14th and 15th Amendments guaranteeing equal protection. Newsom's office took to social media, expressing confidence the lawsuit will fail, stating, “Good luck, losers.” It remains uncertain if a three-judge panel will issue a temporary restraining order before candidates can initiate signature collection on December 19.
