Colleges in the Black Hills launch Indigenous health challenges curriculum

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – A new college program is bringing health issues in Indigenous communities to the forefront.
The Black Hills State University and Indian University of North America at Crazy Horse Memorial launched an undergraduate certificate program in Wichozani Health and Wellness.
The semester-long program will take place at Crazy Horse Memorial and concentrate on wellness and public health education designed for Indigenous communities.
The program is created for people interested in native tribal healthcare services and other related programs with an emphasis on traditional healing practices.
It was also designed to encourage cultural sensitivity and focus on unique health obstacles faced by native communities.
“The courses that we are offering for this certificate program, it’s going to be 12 credits long and the courses will be ‘Ethnobotany of the Northern Plains,’ ‘Native Food Systems’ as well as ‘Native American Public Health,’” said the Outreach Coordinator for Indian University of North America Julissa Fillmore.
The program will officially begin in the spring of 2025.
