Universoul Cafe, a prominent food recovery initiative in Sacramento, faces a devastating blow following a recent break-in and theft at its Del Paso Heights location. Tonya Mack, the organization's founder since November 2019, lamented, “Tens of thousands of dollars in equipment were stolen, erasing years of dedication and effort directed towards aiding the city's most vulnerable populations.”Specializing in salvaging quality surplus food from hotels, restaurants, and large-scale events, Universoul Cafe has provided over a million meals to families in need. The organization also emphasizes workforce development, collaborating with The Young Gents, a mentorship program that equips young men from North Sacramento with essential kitchen skills, financial literacy, and professional readiness.Despite the setback, Mack remains resolute in her commitment to the community.
