As Sacramento flourishes, its Black unhoused population faces barriers in finding stability and opportunities to thrive. The Observer delves into their lives, revealing their identities and the societal factors that keep them in a vulnerable position. In the heart of the city, individuals reside on sidewalks, under freeways, or in vehicles—signs of a growing issue that persists alongside urban development. While Sacramento's population rises and infrastructure improves, the unhoused community concurrently expands, with Black individuals disproportionately affected. Last year's Point-in-Time Count by Sacramento Steps Forward indicated that, despite representing only 13% of the city's demographic, Black individuals comprised 33% of the unhoused population. By highlighting various stories from couch surfers to shelter residents, The Observer examines the roots of this crisis, exploring systemic neglect and engaging with advocates seeking meaningful solutions for this marginalized group. Through a compassionate lens, we will investigate the realities faced by the Black unhoused and the community's efforts to facilitate change.
