Six students from Dallas ISD high schools each received $3,000 scholarships after showcasing their skills in the 2025 Parrish Scholarship Debate Tournament at H. Grady Spruce High School. The tournament focused on the contentious topic of whether specific books should be banned in public schools. Established in 2007, the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance aims to bolster minority participation in debate competitions at secondary and post-secondary levels.
Roland Parrish of the Roland C. Parrish Charitable Foundation has sponsored these scholarships for six years, emphasizing the importance of debate for underserved communities. Cindi Timmons, from DUDA, has dedicated 18 years to nurturing students in the art of debate, equipping them with vital skills for future success. DUDA operates year-round, facilitating student involvement through active debate training, competitions, and unique travel opportunities. Evan Gilbert, a former educator and DUDA program director, echoed the transformative impact debate has on students, fostering critical skills essential for their personal and professional lives.
