On Wednesday morning, the Decatur Housing Authority marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of phase two of the Village at Legacy, the primary new attainable housing initiative aimed at Decatur families in decades. Following the completion of 66 units in phase one, an additional 66 units will be constructed in the second phase. Once finalized, this 132-unit development will rejuvenate Decatur, reinforcing the community's dedication to growth and revitalization while addressing the urgent need for affordable housing. Larry Padilla, the chief executive officer of the Decatur Housing Authority, emphasized, “Modern, safe, and stable housing should be a right for everyone." The ceremony drew over a hundred attendees, including local leaders like Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, Patti Garrett, Doug Faust, and Congressman Hank Johnson. Addressing the housing affordability crisis, Johnson noted that 30% of single-family homes in Atlanta are owned by private equity firms, underscoring the importance of projects like Village at Legacy. Padilla urged increased support for working families, stating, “This must serve as a model for future endeavors.”
