Why We Must Stand Against Governor Abbott’s Efforts to Undermine Minority Voting Rights in Upcoming Special Session

The Texas House of Representatives has revealed that Governor Abbott is set to initiate a special legislative session starting on July 21, which entails a concerning agenda comprising 18 items. Notably, the most contentious issue involves the redistricting of four congressional districts currently held by minority lawmakers: TX-09, TX-18, TX-29, and TX-33.
Abbott's push to modify district boundaries early on, particularly affecting these minority representatives as highlighted in the Department of Justice’s July 7 letter, raises serious alarms regarding democratic integrity. The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, under the guidance of Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, voiced significant concerns regarding unconstitutional racial gerrymandering in these areas. However, the governor appears to manipulate these worries to further a politically driven assault on voting rights.
The DOJ's correspondence designates TX-09, TX-18, TX-29, and TX-33 as “unconstitutional coalition districts.” Instead of resolving these irregularities, Abbott seems intent on exploiting them to disenfranchise Black and minority voters, jeopardizing fair representation in a state with a substantial Black population. Texas requires just electoral strength, untainted by manipulative tactics that threaten its democratic framework.
