Rev. Howard-John Wesley is famously known for delivering poignant truths from the pulpit. His sermon on September 14 at Alfred Street Baptist Church, one of the country’s oldest historically Black congregations, ignited considerable debate. Nonetheless, Wesley enjoys unwavering support from his congregation in Alexandria, Virginia. The sermon, titled “Lead Me to the Rock,” addressed the numerous injustices faced by Black individuals, expressing how this reality can feel insurmountable. In a skillful interpretation of Psalm 61:2, he connected it to the contemporary issue surrounding Charlie Kirk's death, condemned by President Trump as a champion of American liberty. Wesley emphasized that Kirk did not merit death while criticizing the honoring of someone he viewed as a racist. Following threats from Kirk’s admirers, the congregation stood in solidarity with Wesley a week later, affirming their appreciation. Alfred Street Baptist Church remains steadfast, prioritizing safety and cohesion, as it continues its legacy of truth, despite past threats it has faced.
