Independent Doctors Say Cost-Cutting Push May Drive Them Out Of Business

An initiative from insurance companies aimed at curtailing expensive doctor visits has raised alarms among independent practitioners, who caution that it may prompt many to abandon private practice in favor of larger hospital systems. They assert this shift could ultimately elevate patient expenses. Recently, Cigna introduced a new policy to identify billing that appears excessive, potentially lowering reimbursements by one billing level when claim criteria don’t justify the higher code. Dr. David Eagle of the American Independent Medical Practice Association warns that such measures could diminish incomes for private physicians, jeopardizing patient care. Although providers can appeal downgraded claims with detailed records, the process can be labor-intensive, particularly for smaller practices. Cigna contends that only about 1% of providers will see an impact, citing “overbilling” as a primary concern. However, independent practitioners emphasize that these policies could accelerate the trend of physicians seeking employment within larger systems, undermining personalized patient care.
