TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – It wasn't until the late 1800s that Black and Brown individuals began cultivating their own enterprises. Presently, Black entrepreneurship plays a vital role in fostering economic vitality within their communities. Despite numerous hurdles, business owners express confidence in their ability to surmount these obstacles. "I find it inspiring that we can pursue our dreams freely," remarked Marquita Erwin, Founder of Black Entrepreneurs of Tyler and HG Salon. Juneteenth signifies 160 years of liberation, a gift Erwin attributes to divine favor. In 2016, she took a leap of faith to establish HG Salon, inspired by 1 Corinthians 11:15, which emphasizes a woman's hair as her glory. This journey also led to the formation of the Black Entrepreneurs of Tyler Facebook group, aiming to unite and uplift undiscovered local businesses. Initially starting small in 2021, the group has expanded to connect around 1,500 businesses throughout East Texas. Sandra Burns, Executive Director of the Metro Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the importance of ongoing support for community growth. Erwin and Burns encourage sustained collaboration, recognizing that as Black businesses flourish, they reinvest in their surroundings.
