(New Initiative for Civic Engagement) – As an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, I know firsthand the challenges many face in seeking a voice in our society. My journey has led me to dedicate my efforts to supporting those without legal status through my work with the New Initiative for Civic Engagement – known as NICE. It’s time we recognize the vital role that Temporary Protected Status plays in empowering immigrants and fostering community resilience.TPS is a vital lifeline for individuals fleeing natural disasters, armed conflict or other extraordinary circumstances in their home countries. It provides crucial protection from deportation, allowing recipients to live, work and contribute to their communities in the U.S. Beyond mere survival, TPS recipients are essential workers, students and business owners – people striving for a better life for themselves, their communities and their new country. Despite facing challenges, TPS recipients demonstrate resilience and significantly contribute to American society. TPS is about providing a second chance and standing in solidarity to protect the vulnerable ensuring that everyone, regardless of where they were born, has the opportunity to build a brighter future.Related Stories
