Globally, workers' rights are in a state of alarming decline, with the Trump administration spearheading a far-right coalition engaged in a “global war on labor rights.” This distressing assessment emerges from the latest Global Rights Index, released by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), which encompasses 191 million workers across 169 countries. The 2025 Index states, “We are witnessing a coup against democracy, a systematic assault by government and corporate powers on the rights and welfare of labor.” It highlights that far-right leaders, supported by affluent backers, aim to reshape societal structures to benefit elite interests, disregarding the needs of ordinary workers. Since 2014, the Global Rights Index remains the sole extensive examination of labor rights and union freedoms, revealing a “stark and worsening crisis” for workers and unions alike.
