On Saturday, July 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Amite will unveil a Louisiana state historical marker, celebrating its 139-year heritage in the community. Established in 1886, the church has been a sanctuary of worship, security, and leadership for countless Black Americans in Tangipahoa Parish.
Rev. Herman O. Kelly Jr., the church's pastor, emphasized the significance of this history for younger generations, acknowledging the church as a refuge and a source of community leaders. The initiative to erect the marker emerged after Rev. Kelly attended a similar event honoring the Rev. Arthur Tasker, with Antoinette Harrell facilitating the process for Grant Chapel’s recognition.
Harrell's dedicated efforts included guiding the church in gathering historical documentation and crafting the marker’s text. Contributions from members, like Vera Wheeler and Grace Belvin Walker Perry, were instrumental in meeting the application deadline. Community members are encouraged to attend the unveiling at 317 W. Oak Street, Amite.
