Violence profoundly affects the Indianapolis community. While The Indianapolis Star reported that homicide rates remained stable and non-fatal shootings declined last year, the troubling rise in non-fatal gun violence among minors persists. Survivors of gun-related incidents and other violent acts endure consequences that extend beyond their physical wounds, impacting their families and the wider community. Eskenazi Health’s Prescription for Hope addresses these challenges once emergency care concludes. The program’s primary initiative offers patient support, connecting those injured by violence with critical resources in finance, mental health, education, and employment. Throughout their hospital stay, team members engage with patients and families, guiding them through recovery. Focusing on youth, the program collaborates with schools to identify and support at-risk students. Additionally, the H.O.P.E. Reentry arm aids adults of color reintegrating from the criminal justice system, offering vital resources for education and employment. Prescription for Hope not only aids survivors but actively helps mitigate future violence, encouraging community resilience.
