As Saint Lucia's Carnival evolves, concerns grow regarding the preservation of its traditional roots amid rising commercialism and generational changes. In a recent panel at the Listwa Kannaval public lecture at the Financial Centre, diverse voices shared their perspectives. Some expressed alarm about the perceived erosion of Mas, while others advocated for the necessity of adaptation to contemporary realities. Cultural activist Embert Charles highlighted a troubling trend, stating, “J’ouvert is now so organised. If you don’t pay, you can’t partake.” He reminisced about a time when access was open to all. Charles warned that the essence of Mas is at risk, urging caution against excessive segregation within carnival events, which could unfairly privilege certain elements. Tourism and Culture Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire emphasized that necessary adjustments reflect changing times. He seeks to create opportunities for millennials and Gen Z to engage in traditional events. While acknowledging resistance from traditionalists, Hilaire remains hopeful that these changes can rejuvenate national celebrations. Former Minister Dr. Damian Greaves echoed the call for reflection on carnival's unifying role, advocating for a deliberate effort to enhance cultural creativity.
