Hot Not-So-Fun In The Summertime
News Talk
Special to the OBSERVER
This heat ain’t cool. With summer temperatures soaring above 100 degrees, here are some ways Sacramentans can chill out, as well as services provided by the City of Sacramento to beat the heat.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water before you feel thirsty, especially if you’re outside or doing physical activity. You also can try isotonic sports drinks to replenish lost fluids, salts and sugars. Avoid very cold drinks and caffeine.
Limit Sun Exposure
Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces or go to public places with air conditioning.
Wear Light Clothing
Choose loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from breathable, moisture-wicking materials like cotton or linen.
Cool Off
Take cool showers, use a spray bottle or damp sponge to keep your skin wet, or apply cold to key parts of your body. You also can visit one of Sacramento’s 17 open pools, some of which have free admission.
Find A Cooling Center
You can use 211 Sacramento to find the nearest cooling center, daytime respite center, community center, or public library with air conditioning.
Check On Others
Make sure to check in on older friends, family and neighbors who live alone or are less mobile.
