Why ICE's Actions Against Our Neighbors Demand Our Collective Resistance

The seismic activity within Los Angeles extends beyond geological shifts. The repercussions of ICE raids are profoundly felt, with disturbing instances of pregnant women being apprehended, a 9-year-old taken into custody, and day laborers facing intimidation at local Home Depots. Tens of thousands rallied over the weekend, predominantly peacefully, against these actions and Donald Trump's authoritarian directives. In response, Trump ordered ICE to intensify detentions and deportations, raising significant alarm.
As a lifelong Angeleno and former educator in Compton during its demographic transformation, I recognize the troubling narratives emerging from segments of the Black community regarding these raids, arguing they are not our concern. However, ignoring our intertwined histories, which include shared struggles against oppression, risks perpetuating division. Notable collaborations, such as those during the civil rights movement, emphasize the importance of solidarity. Black and Latino communities, long entangled in both friendship and kinship, must unite now more than ever, fostering mutual support amid prevailing challenges.
