Iowa Schools Superintendent's License Revoked After ICE Arrest for Alleged Immigration Violations

On Monday, a state agency rescinded the professional license of Iowa's largest school district leader, Des Moines public schools Superintendent Ian Roberts, shortly after federal authorities apprehended him under allegations of residing and working illegally in the U.S. The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners communicated to Roberts that he is unqualified for a license as he lacks legal presence in the country. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Roberts on Friday, citing an existing removal order issued by a judge in May 2024.
Originally from Guyana, Roberts entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999. His arrest, which occurred after a traffic stop, revealed he possessed a loaded handgun and a hunting knife. Des Moines school officials were reportedly unaware of Roberts' immigration status. The district's board placed him on paid administrative leave, announcing that further discussions about his leave status would occur. While the board acknowledged his leadership, significant concerns regarding his legal status were raised.
