Reshaping Herndon Stadium: Atlanta’s Opportunity to Create a Modern Rickwood Field

Former Atlanta Braves legend Andruw Jones took his place in the batter’s box, met with a thunderous ovation from the crowd at Rickwood Field. Hundreds gathered to witness baseball icons such as Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, B.J. and Justin Upton, Mike Cameron, Curtis Granderson, Gary Sheffield, and manager Dusty Baker, along with C.C. Sabathia, future Hall of Fame inductee. Fans wore Negro League jerseys and replicas of Willie Mays' San Francisco Giants attire, while one proudly displayed Jones’ jersey. On Juneteenth, Rickwood Field, the nation’s oldest active baseball venue, hosted the second East-West Classic, supported by Major League Baseball and featuring former pros. The outfield wall proudly showcases advertisements from major brands, alongside local businesses. This event attracted media attention and highlighted Birmingham’s rich baseball history.
