In a significant blow to the community, the last full-service grocery store near 31st & Prospect closed its doors recently, exacerbating the already dire food desert conditions for countless Black residents and low-income families. Rather than seeking solutions from City Hall, community leaders have united to take action. The Kansas City Defender, along with KC Black Urban Growers, the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Association, and several prominent Black farms in the region, are launching the Hamer Free Food Program. This groundbreaking initiative aims to deliver free, fresh produce directly from Black farms to Black families residing within a mile of 31st and Prospect. This program, named after civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer, purchases quality produce from local farms and seeks to deliver nutrient-rich food to 50 households, prioritizing Black elders and those facing mobility challenges. Volunteers will also be trained, ensuring community participation and empowering local residents.
