This month, Kansas City welcomes the distinguished author and scholar Howard W. French, recognized as one of today's foremost voices on Africa and the Black experience. He will discuss his latest work, *The Second Emancipation*, with esteemed local elder and activist Baba Mickey Dean of the National Black United Front-KC. French's book examines the monumental shift in the mid-20th century as colonialism began to crumble across Africa. Ghana’s independence in 1957 sparked a wave of liberation throughout the continent, which he identifies as a "movement of global Blackness," fundamentally reshaping our contemporary realities, from diaspora dynamics to resource struggles. Join French at the Kansas City Public Library for a Signature Event titled "The Second Emancipation: Nkrumah, Pan-Africanism, and Global Blackness at High Tide," on Thursday, August 21, from 6–7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, located at 4801 Main St. RSVP at kclibrary.org/events.
