When the mercury rises, we slam the windows shut and crank up the AC. It’s something some of us take for granted, but as a pastor serving the Sacramento area, I know many of our neighbors don’t have that luxury — and, yes, air conditioning, for them, is a luxury.& & I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that extreme heat can have on our community. During these relentless summer months, when temperatures frequently soar above 100 degrees, the need for cooling centers becomes a matter of life and death.& For many, especially our elderly and vulnerable populations, the scorching heat is more than just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat strokes are real threats, particularly for those who lack adequate cooling in their homes or at work.& According to a recent report, over the last decade we have lost nearly 460 Californians to extreme heat, while thousands more were hospitalized.
