The Texas NAACP, with representation from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, submitted a motion on Tuesday seeking a preliminary injunction in their current lawsuit against Texas. They contest the newly enacted congressional maps, claiming they engage in unlawful racial gerrymandering. These maps undermine critical majority-minority districts, weakening the capacity of Black and Brown communities to fairly select their political leaders.Initially filed in 2021, this lawsuit addresses Texas’ redistricting scheme across congressional, state Senate, and House districts, alleging intentional discrimination against people of color, particularly in the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston regions. The Department of Justice highlighted concerns earlier this year regarding racially gerrymandered Democratic districts, prompting Governor Greg Abbott to amend the legislative agenda, responding controversially to claims of misinterpretation. Plaintiffs assert these new maps further dismantle Black and Brown community influence ahead of the 2026 midterms.
