Lawmakers in California Mark Juneteenth by Highlighting Its Historical Significance

California's elected officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and members of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), recently celebrated Juneteenth—a holiday signifying the conclusion of slavery in the United States. This observance, long honored in numerous Black communities, was designated as a federal holiday by former President Joe Biden in 2021. Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles), vice chair of the CLBC, emphasized the unique plight of Black Americans, stating they were brought to the U.S. against their will. He urged support for Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 90, co-sponsored by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Carson). Governor Newsom's proclamation highlighted the significance of Juneteenth, acknowledging that the fight for freedom persists today. State officials, including Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson and Assemblymember LaShae Sharp Collins, expressed the need for ongoing advocacy in honor of this historical legacy.
