J’ouvert, the ceremonial kickoff of Carnival, commenced at 4 a.m. on Monday, as enthusiastic participants converged at designated points, subsequently saturating the streets of Castries. The remarkable attendance underscored that Lucian J’ouvert remains an integral cultural tradition. Eight vibrant bands showcased their creativity, including the previous year’s champion, Back in Time, who celebrated Saint Lucian Carnival with a lively display rich in pageantry, steelpan music, soca, and the Dennery segment. Among the participants, the storied band Mudsters contributed with their theme, Mud Love. Other bands included J’ouvert Reborn (Jab Jab Unleashed), Come to Me Tire Shop (Democracy Jam), Funventure J’ouvert (Feelin’ Irie), Just 4 Fun (Vikings), Wee Outside J’ouvert Band (A Tale of Two Flowers), and Xpressions Carnival (Carib J’ouvert Jammers). As the parade energized the John Compton Highway, Ole Mas players and splashes of mud, paint, and oil invigorated the atmosphere. With no reported incidents, organizers celebrated a successful event, with the announcement of J’ouvert Band of the Year set for Wednesday.
