Magic Johnson: Black Americans Must Continue Fight Against HIV Epidemic

Earvin "Magic" Johnson's 1991 HIV diagnosis sent shockwaves through the sports arena, garnering international attention at a time when infections were often fatal. Now, he boasts a viral load that is nearly undetectable, defying grim statistics which indicate that Black individuals face disproportionately higher infection and mortality rates than their white counterparts.At a recent keynote address during the National Minority AIDS/HIV Conference in Washington, D.C., Johnson imparted a crucial message to the Black Gen Z community. While he has thrived with the virus for over thirty years, he emphasized that it remains a severe threat to Black lives, deserving serious contemplation.Data indicates that Black individuals, constituting about 13% of the U.S. population, represent nearly 39% of new HIV diagnoses. Johnson underscored the necessity of vigilance, as the virus significantly impacts Black communities. He urged continual education and awareness to confront prevailing disinformation, advocating teamwork in this urgent fight.
