College Chaplain Brings Faith Alive by Sharing Lessons, Not Lectures

Transforming Sunday services from morning to afternoon and hosting open-air worship sessions has significantly boosted student engagement at Morgan State University, thanks to chaplain Lawrence Lockett Jr. His unique ability to connect with students stems from diverse experiences that resonate with their realities.With a historical foundation as a Bible institute, Morgan State embraces a strong faith tradition. Under Lockett’s guidance, chapel attendance has surged from approximately 25 to over 200 participants. This growth is attributed to Lockett’s insightful approach, emphasizing independent thought and vulnerability while guiding students.Lockett’s weekly schedule includes Bible studies, meditation sessions, and interfaith prayer gatherings. His initiative, “Spin the Block,” promotes outdoor worship, attracting curious students drawn by the engaging atmosphere. Lockett’s vision for the chapel centers on nurturing spiritual health alongside mental well-being, creating an inclusive space where all faiths can converge, ultimately aiming to foster a deeper connection among students and their beliefs.
