In Memphis, a mother will not face criminal charges after she shot an intruder during a home invasion, reports Black Enterprise. Surveillance footage captured the unidentified woman retreating to a room while pleading with three intruders to vacate her residence. She informed them that her children were present before firing at one of the assailants. The suspects, 21-year-olds Kimari Burnham and Nala Kelley, along with 22-year-old Dejwan Payne, were apprehended and face charges related to the break-in. Burnham, who sustained gunshot wounds, is reported to be in critical condition. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office dispatched officers following reports of the shooting occurring around 10 p.m., where they discovered Burnham with a gunshot injury. Authorities suspect a domestic motive behind the intrusion. All three individuals face aggravated burglary charges, while Burnham and Kelley are additionally charged with misdemeanor vandalism. Investigators concluded that the mother acted within her rights in defending her home. Defense attorney Brandon Hall highlighted Tennessee's laws allowing forceful defense of one’s property, asserting that any unauthorized entry provides sufficient grounds for self-defense, regardless of whether the intruders were armed.
