New Faculty Positions for Five African American Scholars

Charles Bell has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the department of criminal justice sciences at Illinois State University. His research explores how out-of-school suspension, seclusion, restraint, and school safety measures impact students, parents, and teachers. He has authored several publications including Suspended: Punishment, Violence, and the Failure of School Safety (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2021).
Dr. Bell is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he majored in psychology. He received his master’s degree in school psychology from Michigan State University before returning to Wayne State to earn his Ph.D. in sociology.
Miracle-Rose Toppar has joined the faculty at Georgia State University as a clinical assistant professor in the department of economics. She most recently served an assistant professor of economics and business management at Ripon College in Wisconsin. Earlier in her career, she taught at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and Iowa State University.
Dr. Toppar holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University.
