Detroit marked a significant milestone in its rejuvenation efforts recently, as Leona Medley, executive director of the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, alongside Mayor Mike Duggan, celebrated the opening of a newly completed segment of the Joe Louis Greenway near Grand River and Oakman Boulevard. The occasion featured the unveiling of a striking bronze statue in honor of boxing legend Joe Louis, recognizing his vital role in dismantling racial barriers in professional golf. This new section enhances the greenway by adding two miles of accessible paths for pedestrians and cyclists, extending its total length to nearly six miles. The complete greenway aims to span 29 miles, linking 23 neighborhoods and several nearby communities. Duggan emphasized the greenway's potential for transforming blighted areas into vibrant communal spaces. Additionally, the segment includes new safety features such as emergency call boxes and an open-air shelter, contributing to a sense of unity and pride among residents in the area.
