The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), recently conducted a workshop designed to enhance clinical management concerning rape and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This initiative, funded by Global Affairs Canada, aims to fortify Saint Lucia’s frontline clinical services for survivors of rape and various forms of gender-based violence.The training convened healthcare professionals island-wide, equipping them with refined skills necessary for providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. Alongside improved management of sexual violence cases, attendees were updated on STI treatment protocols, fostering a more integrated approach to sexual and reproductive healthcare.Senior Medical Officer Dr. Gail Gajadhar highlighted the significance of ongoing professional development. She stated that updated clinical knowledge allows for better service integration, ultimately easing the strain on hospital emergency departments.Deputy Permanent Secretary Ernest Norbal emphasized the health ramifications of sexual assault, including STI risks, and praised the training's impact on increasing the ministry's response capacity. UNFPA also donated vital sexual and reproductive health supplies to enhance these services further.
