Philadelphia rapper LGP Qua, born Qidere Johnson, was celebrated for his inspiring and positive lyrics aimed at uplifting youth. Tragically, on Mother’s Day, he became yet another casualty of the gun violence he frequently condemned. With a substantial following of 300,000 on Instagram, Qua’s untimely death marks a grim reality for hip-hop artists; homicide is the leading cause of death in this genre, with more than 100 lives lost since 2014, predominantly young Black males. Authorities have arrested 19-year-olds Joshua Thomas-Coleman and Abdul Boyd for Qua’s murder, while a third suspect, 21-year-old Amir Earley, remains at large. Attended by 500 mourners, Qua’s funeral showcased the profound impact of his community contributions, highlighting the urgent need to address violence affecting young Black men.
