A recent investigation published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reveals that warning signs frequently appear before heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues. These signs correlate with established risk factors and suggest opportunities to further reduce heart disease prevalence. The research team examined data from over 600,000 cardiovascular disease patients in South Korea, along with approximately 1,000 cases from the United States. Notably, more than 99% of individuals exhibited at least one risk factor, such as elevated blood pressure, blood sugar, high cholesterol, or a history of smoking, prior to diagnosis. Lead author Dr. Philip Greenland emphasizes the importance of addressing even marginal increases in these risks. Dr. Susan Cheng, who was not part of the study, concurs that managing these factors is essential for preventing heart disease. This research reinforces that a thorough understanding of cardiovascular risk transcends diagnosis, indicating that traditional risk factors persist among patients. Embracing lifestyle modifications can significantly improve well-being and longevity.
