The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently dismissed several trademark applications submitted by Bill Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. The couple aimed to secure trademarks for clothing and other merchandise; however, the trademark office denied these requests, citing potential “likelihood of confusion” with existing trademarks. Notably, the New England Patriots, Belichick’s former team, possess rights to the trademarks Hudson sought to claim, including phrases such as “Do Your Job (Bill’s Version)” and “The Belestrator (Bill’s Version).” The Patriots initially trademarked these terms in 2009 and 2013, among other years. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben emphasized the impossibility of registering variations of established trademarks. Although the applications were rejected, some merchandise related to Jordon Hudson is currently available at the UNC store. TCE Rights Management, linked to Belichick and Hudson, has three months to appeal the decision. Ultimately, the trademark landscape proves challenging, even for a sports icon.
