Plaintiffs Seek to Keep Reparations Suit Alive

The initial lawsuit was filed in May by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal action group, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Judicial Watch argues the City violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by using race as an eligibility requirement for the historic reparations program.
In a statement sent to Evanston Now, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton wrote, “Evanston’s reparations scheme rejects a colorblind Constitution and unconstitutionally discriminates against anyone who does not identify as Black or African American. The court should allow Judicial Watch’s class action, civil rights lawsuit to move forward.”
