PM Urges OECS to Take Decisive Steps Toward Free Trade Implementation

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre delivered a pointed assessment of the OECS's slow progress in regional integration during this week's gathering, cautioning that persistent delays in meeting treaty obligations, especially concerning the free movement of goods, undermine the economic union's potential to enhance citizens' welfare. Addressing the 7th OECS Assembly under the theme Strengthening Regional Unity in a Shifting Global Order, Pierre criticized the ongoing struggles to implement a revised treaty enforced since 2011. He urged the prompt passage of five essential bills to facilitate the free circulation of goods—a fundamental aspect of the revised Treaty of Basseterre. Highlighting the urgency, he reaffirmed the necessity for these legislative measures to positively impact everyday lives. Pierre warned against distractions, advocating for consistent dedication to regional integration, and emphasized that the economic union's effectiveness should be assessed through its tangible benefits to citizens' quality of life. He called for action, underscoring that further delays could aggravate existing challenges.
