Nearly 500,000 students across Texas may find their college funding severely diminished due to aggressive potential cuts to the Pell Grant program, vital for the nation’s most financially challenged students. The Pell Grant represents the largest source of grant aid within Texas.
A significant proposal in a massive budget package backed by President Trump aims to reduce Pell Grant awards by approximately $1,500, imposing stricter eligibility criteria, including a requirement for students to complete 30 credits yearly instead of the current 24. Further, those enrolled less than half-time would become ineligible for this aid.
In Texas, these changes could culminate in a financial aid loss ranging from $353 to $493 million. Although the state provides some aid, it cannot sufficiently bridge the gaps left by Pell reductions. Community college students would be disproportionately affected, as many attend part-time due to work or familial obligations, posing substantial barriers to completing their education and undermining state support initiatives.
