Nashville's Proposed Tunnel Project: Impacts and Concerns for Black Communities

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Plans for a sophisticated new tunnel linking downtown Nashville to the airport are stirring skepticism among local residents, who are questioning the project's true beneficiaries. During a press conference on July 28, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Steve Davis from Elon Musk’s Boring Company unveiled an initiative for a high-speed underground tunnel under Murfreesboro Pike, designated solely for Tesla vehicles. This route will connect a state-owned downtown lot to Nashville International Airport (BNA), omitting several largely Black and immigrant neighborhoods along its path. State officials assert that the venture will not utilize taxpayer funds; nonetheless, it fails to incorporate WeGo Public Transit or any local transportation systems, raising concerns among community leaders. Mayor Freddie O’Connell indicated awareness of the discussions but emphasized the need for operational clarity regarding impacts on Metro residents. Critics, including At-Large Metro Councilmember Delishia Porterfield, decried the absence of community engagement in the planning. Local officials are now advocating for an equity impact assessment, public involvement sessions, and a Community Benefits Agreement to empower affected residents and safeguard against displacement.
