Following two challenging defeats to commence the football season, Sacramento State achieved a significant victory with a 49-28 triumph over Mercyhurst University from Erie, Pennsylvania, on September 12 at Hornet Stadium. This marked the first win for the newly appointed coach Brennan Marion, as his offense erupted with an impressive 349 rushing yards and five touchdowns. In contrast, the Hornets had managed a mere 20 points in their prior two losses. Star running back Damian Henderson II excelled with a career-best 98 yards and three touchdowns, while Rodney Hammond Jr. contributed 81 yards, and quarterback Cardell Williams added 52 yards and a touchdown. Running backs Sam Adams II and Savion Red provided additional support. This remarkable rushing performance was the team’s highest since 2022, falling just 17 yards shy of entering Sacramento State's top five. Defensively, the Hornets secured interceptions from Koa Akui and Oscar Moore during Mercyhurst's final possessions. Sacramento State will host Central Arkansas on Saturday, September 20, at 6 p.m., with the game broadcast locally on KMAX31.
