As Saint Lucia's government pursues hydroponics to engage the youth in farming, Etienne symbolizes both potential and challenges linked to this modern approach. Agriculture Minister Alfred Prospere asserts the industry’s future relies on attracting young talent like Etienne. He emphasized during a recent Cabinet briefing that engaging youth through innovative technologies is essential for revitalization. While Etienne recognizes the advantages of hydroponics, such as minimized weed competition and targeted nutrient control, he remains realistic. He cautions against factors like inadequate sunlight, which can jeopardize yields. Recently inaugurated, the Agriculture Innovation and Entrepreneurship Facility in Union features a hydroponics unit aimed at training future farmers. However, Etienne expresses concern over the accessibility of these systems, fearing disparities in grant assistance may hinder less-connected individuals from benefiting. Prospere, inspired by a recent initiative in Guyana, hopes potential funding from the Youth Economy Agency will empower aspiring farmers. Despite reservations, Etienne is eager to explore hydroponics as a promising alternative.
