Queer, Black, and a woman—Jhy Coulter refers to this identity as “The Trifecta.” While the world often views this intersection as complex and isolating, for Coulter, it shapes her very essence and business foundation. This vibrancy permeates her restaurant, Orange by Devoured, located in Kansas City’s Martini Corner.However, the journey wasn't instantaneous. In the pandemic's early days, Coulter began crafting pizzas in her backyard as a survival mechanism. What began as a pop-up, Devoured Pizza, rapidly transformed into a beloved local phenomenon. By August 2023, she had opened her restaurant, marking a significant expansion from her humble beginnings.Driven by authenticity, she elevates classic flavors into memorable experiences. With a background in nonprofit work, Coulter emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for marginalized communities. Winning a grant for an outdoor parklet aims to extend that safe environment. As Coulter approaches her first anniversary, it’s evident that Orange by Devoured is more than pizza; it’s a vibrant community hub.
