Sheriff Releases Video Of Black Teen’s March Shooting

By Robert J. Hansen | OBSERVER Staff Writer The Sacramento Sheriff’s Office last month released video of a deputy shooting an 18-year-old man March 5. In the video, Marquis Chapple is seen exiting a vehicle from the passenger side while holding a gun. He immediately turns and runs a few strides before a deputy fires three shots, hitting him twice. Chapple survived after being struck in the right torso and left buttock. Three detectives with the sheriff’s gang suppression unit were conducting proactive enforcement in the South Sacramento area when they engaged a vehicle for having expired registration, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office claims Chapple had the gun pointed at a deputy when he opened the door. However, in the video, the gun appears to be pointed away from the deputy and Chapple was not shot until his back was turned to the deputy. “We do not draw any conclusions on whether our deputy acted in a manner consistent with our policies and the law until all the facts are known and the investigation is complete,” sheriff’s spokesperson Amar Gandhi said in a statement.
