Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the cherished chaplain and ardent supporter of the Loyola-Chicago men’s basketball program, has passed away. Loyola University Chicago announced her death on Thursday. Mark C. Reed, the university president, conveyed, “Sister Jean brought immeasurable wisdom and grace to countless students, faculty, and staff throughout her over 60 years at Loyola.” He further emphasized the impact of her presence, saying, “Our community feels a deep sense of loss; however, we celebrate her remarkable legacy. Her influence will always remain in the lives of many.” The university is expected to share information regarding visitation and funeral arrangements shortly. Sister Jean rose to fame during Loyola-Chicago’s unexpected run to the Final Four in 2018, gaining significant national attention. Just a month prior, she stepped down from her long-standing role with the men’s team. Having begun her teaching career in 1961 at Mundelein College, she eventually joined Loyola-Chicago after the schools merged in 1991. At 106, she will forever cheer for her beloved team from above.
