DURHAM – Over three decades ago, the inaugural scholarship banquet of the Durham Sports Club awarded scholarships of $250 and $500. Fast forward to Wednesday, the club proudly distributed an impressive $71,000 in scholarships among 16 of Durham's most exceptional scholar-athletes. The DSC recognizes outstanding male and female scholar-athletes selected by their schools’ athletic directors. At the celebration, their remarkable achievements were showcased, with all 16 eligible for four prestigious college scholarships.
Keynote speaker Shane Willis, color analyst for the Carolina Hurricanes and former player, offered concise yet powerful advice encapsulated in the three periods of a hockey game. "Identify who you wish to become," he advised. He emphasized the importance of resilience and moving forward after setbacks. Riverside High’s Chloe Mihaley and Jordan High’s Devak Coltrane both received the $7,500 Blunt-Bradshaw Scholarship, while Emerson Dever claimed the $10,000 Mildred Barnes scholarship. No one left without recognition, as the remaining honorees earned $3,000 Tommy Hunt Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. "To witness such talent is truly inspiring," remarked Anthony Lewis, Superintendent of Durham Public Schools.
