Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) - As Juneteenth nears, the Unity Group of Chattanooga has initiated a compelling series of events to celebrate 160 years of emancipation. The inaugural ceremony honored the United States Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.), who were instrumental during the Civil War, contributing to the establishment of the Chattanooga National Cemetery and the dignified burial of soldiers. Community members, alongside historians, gathered to pay homage to their enduring legacy.
Event coordinator Erik Atkins highlighted the significance of acknowledging the U.S.C.T., referring to them as the “fathers of freedom.” He asserted, “They valiantly fought for freedom and liberty. Their sacrifices culminated in the demise of chattel slavery in our nation.”
Robert Phillips, from the 44th U.S. Colored Troops reenactors, noted the profound historical ties embedded in the locale. “Many are unaware of their place in history,” he remarked, pointing out the historical training of the 6888th Postal Battalion nearby in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. This legacy fosters community pride and connection as Juneteenth festivities unfold throughout Chattanooga, culminating in the national holiday on June 19.
