Minister for Youth and Sports Kenson Casimir has emphasized the crucial role of alumni support in advancing sports and nurturing athletes in Saint Lucia.
Based on Jamaican athletes’ success and development model, Casimir outlined his plans to elevate Saint Lucia sports to similar heights.
He stressed the need for comprehensive reforms, including strengthening physical education programs across secondary schools and establishing robust alumni associations to support athletes and create more successful individuals to compete globally.
“My position is, strengthen the physical education program in every secondary school, strengthen the alumni association, get sponsorship, get corporate sector involvement in every secondary schools program, absorb these individuals from the sports academy in those programs. Set up a high performance center for those who actually flourish after Secondary School to give them the best opportunity to be the best version of themselves in sports development,” the Gros Islet MP stated.
The minister’s remarks came amid questions regarding the government’s plans to produce more successful athletes, like Julien Alfred and Michael Joseph, starting in schools and with the youth.
