African-Americans have profoundly influenced baseball since its early days in the 19th century. However, due to Jim Crow segregation, the Negro Baseball League was established 105 years ago this February. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, becoming the first Black player in Major League Baseball. Today, few Negro League players remain, including Norfolk's Sam Allen. Recently, Mr. Allen engaged with Southside youth during their Spring-Easter break, recalling his time in the Negro leagues and sharing the philosophy, “Sports is Life and Life is Sports.”
