Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson aptly labeled my unwavering dedication to The Dallas Examiner and the Dallas community as “a labor of love.” Established in 1986 by my father, Fred J. Finch, Esq., The Dallas Examiner was created to address the demand for “hard news for the [Black] community,” a commitment that has remained steadfast ever since.My parents, Fred and Mildred Newton Finch, utilized their personal finances to launch the publication, and for three generations, our family has continually infused support into this endeavor. My maternal grandfather, a Methodist minister, exemplified a legacy of service and altruism.As the sole heir to The Dallas Examiner, I view this role as not merely a continuation of my father’s dream but as a means to uplift our community. In 1989, my husband and I founded Vision Team, a nonprofit extension of the paper, subsequently initiating the “Future Speak” program, supported by a generous $50,000 donation from AT&T. My children, James and Dr. Melanie Belt, have also dedicated their time to the growth of the paper while actively serving on the Vision Team board.
