On March 13, 2020, the Louisville Police Department carried out a no-knock warrant at Breonna Taylor's residence, tragically resulting in her death after officers opened fire. This devastating incident should never have occurred; Taylor should be alive today. Our thoughts are with her mother, Tamika Palmer, and all of her loved ones as they grapple with this heartbreaking reality. Time and again, they have sought justice from both the federal government and the State of Kentucky in the aftermath of this senseless loss. Yet, today’s action by the Trump administration reflects a troubling reality. The Department of Justice's suggestion that former Kentucky officer Brett Hankison receive merely a one-day sentence is utterly unacceptable. The relentless cycle of violence against our communities must cease, commencing with rightful justice for the victims of a flawed and deeply biased system. Protecting the officers involved in Taylor's death is a grave failure of justice, revealing the administration's true priorities. The Congressional Black Caucus unequivocally denounces this recommendation, emphasizing that the worth of Black lives must be acknowledged. We demand justice.
