Kwesi Daniels, Ph.D., serves as the Head of the Architecture Department at Tuskegee University, situated in Tuskegee, Alabama. An expert in vintage architecture, he recently explored the historic Masonic Temple in downtown Birmingham, an impressive seven-story edifice located at the intersection of 17th Street North and 4th Avenue. Completed in 1924, this architectural landmark was originally built by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons (F & AM) of Alabama. Describing his visit, Daniels stated it was “awe-inspiring,” emphasizing the rarity of visiting such intact historical structures. He remarked that stepping into these spaces reveals the narratives that shaped their surroundings. Notably, the Masonic Temple, designed by Black architects, stands as a testament to cooperative economic principles and serves as a vital educational resource, offering profound insights into the Black community’s historical context in Birmingham. Restoration efforts are underway, focusing on sustainability while preserving its grandeur for future generations.
